Taking good care of your lawn and garden starts with putting up a good fence. People and animals can do a lot of damage, especially if the garden has food. Children often do not mean any harm, but gardens can be a fun place to play. Fencing is usually a good deterrent to keep out the little two legged invaders. Animals like rabbits and deer can be a bit harder. Deer go over and rabbits go under. This is not usually a big deal if you just have grass in your yard, but other plants may be more delicate and/or the gardener does not want his or her crops stolen.
Dogs are the best defense. Even small dogs love to chase deer and of course rabbits. Even if you live an area full of wildlife, dogs will work to protect your crops night and day for dog food, and they do not complain. Even birds are discouraged from stopping by, especially if you get a herd type dog and encourage it to bark at the birds. They learn what to chase by watching what you chase. Dogs in a fruit tree orchard work great, but they can damage ground crops, especially when the crops are young. This is when a fenced in garden within a fenced in yard pays. The dog can patrol around the garden without getting inside, and bark ferociously at every things that comes near the garden.
Yard and kennel fence of twisted wire is some of the best type of fencing. It is fairly strong for its weight and price and the small holes do not allow many if any animals to go through. If you decide on other types of fencing, it is better to avoid wielded wire which pulls apart very easily. Just putting it up often pulls it apart. Chainlike fence wire is attractive and very durable, but some what expensive, heavy, prone to getting tangled, and one of the hardest to construct. Poles on the top and bottom are usually necessary or it is too flexible at the top and bottom which allows animals to push under or ride it down. Wooden privacy fences are nice, but they do block sunlight. Sure fence horse fence often runs a dollar a foot, but it is usually effective even against cows, as well as smaller animals.
