Katharine on Making of Dirty Little Secret
When I first met Producer David Sale the plan was I would demo some tracks for him for another use and that would be it. After we talked for awhile and sang together he started getting some other ideas and decided one day to "sell" me on his idea to make a full length recording where we wrote together. So he took me on a boat ride in a friends kayak on the Eno River.
We set off upstream and I was in the front and he was in the back rowing. He was telling me this very long and fantastical story of song ideas he had and how we would put the tracks together and other plans for world domination. We were passing through some beautiful scenery. We went under an old trestle and past the tree with the teenagers rope swing. I've given up trying to twist around to talk, so I'm just sitting and listening to his voice. Suddenly we're in a part of the river that is surrounded by creepy dead trees and roots and the surface of the water is smothered in pollen and everything is a terrible color. The boat stops and there is silence for a minute and then we both bust out laughing at trying to take ourselves seriously even for a minute. We turned around and we were soon back at the dock. We went up the hill to the studio and began to write.
Katharine on M.C. Records
A big thank you to Mark Carpentieri at M.C. Records. We are going to have a lot of fun working this record. Mark is always cheerful and positive on the phone, and good at remaining calm. When we came to North Carolina last year to talk to me about signing a record deal he attended a concert I gave with the Jazz Squad at 2:30 AM in a very cold tent at Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival way out in the country. He never batted an eye and in fact professed to enjoy himself very much. He has been very brave in changing directions from the Jazz recordings he initially approached me about to the modern pop style we are currently presenting. Being on a label with Odetta and Pine Top Perkins is a true honor and I'm thrilled to see what lies ahead for us in the coming months.
